Little Teashop of Horrors

Little Teashop of Horrors

Secrets, lies, carrot cake and an owl called Skrillex!

Amy Knowles has always been the plain sidekick to her pretty best friend Jules. And whilst the tearoom they both work in on the Monkpark Hall estate in Yorkshire is not exactly awash with eligible bachelors, it's obvious where the male attention is concentrated - and it's not just on the cakes!

There is one man who notices Amy. Joshua Wilson also works at Monkpark, where he flies his birds of prey for visitor entertainment. He lives a lonely existence but he has reasons for choosing isolation - and, in Amy, he may have found somebody who understands.

Then a management change brings slick and well-spoken Edmund Evershott to Monkpark. He's interested in Amy too, but for what reason? Josh suspects the new manager is up to no good - but will Amy? Because Edmund could leave her with much worse than a broken heart...

What I Thought:
This was the first book by Jane Lovering  that I have read and it was nice break from my usual cozy mysteries.  I am not a romance book reading, but this one was a breath of fresh air.  Amy works at the tearoom at Monkpark and Josh, who works with the birds of prey at Monkpark, is interested in her.  When a change brings Edmund to Monkpark, he too is interested in Amy.  This was a well developed storyline with characters that I got to see grow throughout the story.  It was nice that the romances advanced slowly and respectfully.  Amy and Josh both have baggage and it was enjoyable seeing them work through it and heal from it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.

In the first of a delectable new Southern-set baking cozy series, Sophia Cummings, pastry chef extraordinaire, must craft the perfect cake for an old friend’s wedding while sifting through the suspects in a murder.

Bucolic Rumford, Kentucky has glowing fields of bluegrass, a fine selection of bourbons, and now a professional pastry chef. Broken-hearted Sophia Cummings has come home from New York City. She’s not there a minute before she’s charmed into making her high school friend Charlotte’s wedding cake. The kitchen at the Rumford Country Club seems perfect until Chef Emile’s body is discovered, sprawled near the stove, a cast iron skillet on the floor close by.

With one look at the shiny, new frying pan, Sophia knows it’s not Emile’s. She offers her knowledge to Sheriff Carter and her talents to Evelyn, the manager, who needs an interim chef. The mood in the country club is grim: Emile’s peppery personality had burned members and staff alike. Sophia wonders which one of them burned him?

What I Thought:

When I started reading this, I thought oh no I am not going to like this, BUT boy was I wrong!!! I loved this book.  It had a great plot and I loved the small town setting.  Sophia, a pastry chef,  has come home to the small Kentucky town where she grew up to recover from the heartbreak of finding her long-time chef boyfriend  cheating on her.  She agrees to bake the wedding cake of her best friend Charlotte after her baker backs out.  They then find the chef of the local country club bludgeoned to death with an iron skillet.  Sophia needs to prove that the manager of the country club is not the killer so her best friend's wedding can go off without a hitch.  There are a handful of suspects in this one that keeps throwing Sophia off as to who could be the killer.  Not only is Sophia's life threatened, but the there is major chemistry between her and the local sheriff.  Sophia has a lot on her plate, making her friends wedding cake, making birthday cake for her other friend, and many members of the community asking her to cater their events.  Not only is Sophia solving a murder, she is also deciding if she should go back to New York or stay in Rumford.  Her ex shows up and that cause Sophia to make a decision.  The reveal of the killer was a total surprise and something did not see coming.  I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.
