THAT SUMMER
An Inspirational Southern historical novel
The Great Depression brings devastation to the Southern Appalachians, but love’s triangle survives.
To escape his poppa’s physical abuse and their dirt-poor farm life, Jim flees to an imagined prosperous city life where he can make his own choices, ignoring God patiently knocking on his heart’s door. Settled in town, Jim strays from God and the way of faith his momma taught him. He meets a girl and loses his heart … and meets another girl and loses his willpower. Jim wrestles with social and moral dilemmas as he makes a choice beside Caney Creek that will alter the lives of five people.
That Summer is Book #1 in the Caney Creek Series. Book #2 and book #3 are scheduled to release in April 2013 and September 2013, respectively. Follow the Callaway family through all three books. Live their triumphs, sorrows, achievements, and losses. Walk along with them as they meet faith challenges and fight to regain a rightful place in God’s plan.

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fast read filled with very likable characters.  Even when Jim was confused he wasn't unlikable.  This is the story of Jim, who decided to leave home because of his father's strong hand.  He goes to the town of Newton, TN.  He has to lie about his age to get a job.  This book was very well written and Jim's struggles seem so real.  He has attracted the attention of two different women.  One is the boss' daughter, Caroline.  When she up and leaves and doesn't tell Jim why, he turns to Louisa the other girl.  All this happens during the Great Depression.  Jim and Louisa marry and have a daughter.  Around twenty years later, Jim and Caroline are reunited, will they rekindle the spark they had.  I felt that I knew the characters really well after reading this story.  This is also  a story that will stay with me long after I put it down.  I can't wait to read the next book in the Caney Creek series.  Great job Jo.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
